Updated March 4, 2004

The Herbarium of Louisiana State University
Director: Dr. Lowell E. Urbatsch, 225-578-8555

  1. Faculty and qualified persons from Louisiana State University, other colleges and universities, and State and Federal agencies can consult the collections unassisted, with advanced notice. Others may visit the collections only with the supervision of a staff member. All visitors must sign the guest book.
  2. Faculty and staff from Louisiana State University and State and Federal agencies requiring identification or consulting services of the herbarium staff should budget these expenses into their grant proposals or operating costs. These types of services can be contracted with the herbarium staff, at the following rates:
  3. Identifications: $8.00/specimen*, $40 minimum

    Consulting: $50/hour/person (one hour minimum)

  4. Private, for-profit firms and consultants can use the herbarium at the following rates:
  5. Identifications: $12/specimen*, $60 minimum

$50/hr for assisted service, including consulting from herbarium staff (one hour minimum)

$35/hr for unassisted use (one hour minimum)

  6. Louisiana State University students may not receive identifications on specimens collected for a course or use the collection for course preparation. A "teaching collection" is available in Room 118, Life Sciences Building. Problem specimens requiring identification should be directed to course personnel and not herbarium staff.
  7. Consultation requiring literature searches will be charged the same hourly rates as above, with an additional photocopy charge of $0.25/page.

*We do not guarantee identifications to species/varietal level of sterile material (specimens that lack flowers, fruits, cones, or spores) or material that is insufficient in quantity as to be unidentifiable. Insufficient material that is deemed unidentifiable will not incur a charge. If unsure about what to collect, consult the herbarium staff.
