Basal leaves

3- lobed or deeply parted, simple; Hirsute petioles 5- 10 cm: Blades  2 -7.5 cm long and 3 – 15 cm broad, cordate – reniform in outline; Margins  lobed to crenate or toothed; Bases cordate; Apices rounded or angled ( acute or obtuse)

 

Cauline leaves

similar to basal but smaller.

Mesic woods, stream banks , swamps and bottomland thickets

Pedicels 1-8 mm long in flower , 1-5 cm long in fruit, sparsely appressed, pubescent; Sepals 5, greenish , 4-7 mm long, 2-2.5 mm broad sparsely pilose; Corolla 5-9 petals , 2.5-6 mm long and 1-2 mm wide , yellow , narrowly elliptic; Stamens 10-25

 

Fruit

Achenes glabrous, green – yellowish, 1.5 – 2.2mm long and broad , suborbicular , flat with narrow margin that forms a rib , hooked beak 0.5- 1.4 mm long, found in globose heads of 10-25 achenes .

 

 

Habit and stem features

Perennnial; Herbaceous; Stems 1.5-6 dm tall, erect, branching mostly above , never rooting at nodes; bulbous corm like base; villous- hirsute.
